“Southwest Floridians need to prepare for sea level rise and the effects of climate change,” David Holden, Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida’s 19th Congressional District, told attendees at a Tidal Town Hall in Naples on Aug. 14. The event was part of town halls throughout Florida addressing the issue of sea level rise.

Asked what can be done, Holden responded:

“Number one; let’s acknowledge that climate change is real. We have a federal government that denies that climate change is real. In addition to that, we’ve had eight years of that in Florida under Governor Scott and we have scrubbed climate science from the EPA [Environmental Protection Agency]. Francis Rooney and the Republicans have undone decades of climate protections and funding for the EPA and other organizations.

“Number two, we can insist, with a Democratic House and maybe a Senate, that climate change and sea level rise be taken into account for all federal agency planning.

“And three, a Democratic Congress can ensure a steady stream of funding to research and try to implement climate change solutions and sea level rise solutions.

“Climate change is real and science is real but it doesn’t fit the ideological agenda of this administration or Francis Rooney. So we have to support science and we have to follow that science wherever it leads us. And this is not how it needs to be. In the 60s and 70s, it was Republicans and Democrats working together to bring the legislation forward that was signed by Republican President Richard Nixon on the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act and the creation of the EPA. But we have to break down the silos, we cannot be reactive when they assault science; we have to be strongly supportive of science and scientists at every level and as a member of Congress I will be fighting for that every day.”

Hands Along the Water

On Sunday, Aug. 12, David Holden, Democratic candidate for Congress in Florida’s 19th Congressional District, joined hundreds of his fellow Floridians on Fort Myers Beach to show his commitment to improving the state of Southwest Florida’s waters and beaches.

“It was a great way to show our concern and determination to protect our natural environment,” said Holden. “Southwest Florida is standing up and demanding change!”

Why I’m with David: Campaign volunteers share their experiences

This week: Carol Montgomery

Here are a few reasons I support David Holden: Holden believes it’s time to move beyond partisanship. The incumbent, Frances Rooney, is a conservative Republican who votes consistently (97 percent of the time) with the Trump agenda.

Rooney believes in reducing our national debt but voted for tax cuts for the wealthy that may endanger Medicare and Medicaid. Holden believes in responsible taxation that will protect Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Rooney believes it’s time to repeal and replace Obamacare but our Republican Congress has weakened Obamacare with no replacement in sight. Holden believes that Obamacare is a sound law with some weaknesses that can be corrected.

Vote for David Holden in the Aug. 28 primary and the Nov. 6 election.
