Missouri voters deals blow to Rooney anti-worker agenda

On Tuesday, Aug. 7, Missouri voters resoundingly defeated anti-union legislation by a 2-to-1 margin. The vote was hailed as an assertion of worker rights and an indicator that a long-running tide of Republican anti-union legislation is being turned back across the nation.

“This overwhelming decision by Missouri voters shows that working people have a voice and a vote and are willing to use it,” said David Holden, Democratic congressional candidate in Florida’s 19th congressional district. “People are awake and motivated. We’re going to see the same kind of voter enthusiasm here in Southwest Florida in the August 28th primary and again in the November general election.”

Rep. Francis Rooney, the Republican that Holden intends to replace, is a vocal opponent of working families and has consistently introduced anti-union measures in Congress. These include bills to make it easier to de-certify unions, restrict worker-support organizations and stop “micro-unions,” organizations that do not include all workers in a workplace.

“Francis Rooney has followed a consistent anti-worker agenda,” said Holden. “He’s a big part of the problem but just as voters in Missouri have had enough, so have Southwest Floridians. Come November, Southwest Florida’s working families will have a voice and a champion when I get to Washington.”

David Holden, Democratic candidate in the 19th Congressional District, told the audience at the League of Women Voters’ Candidate Forum on Thursday, August 2, that it’s time to start working toward a system of healthcare that covers everyone, not just those who can afford to pay top dollar.

“We’ve failed younger generations by not being able to come together as citizens to address the critical needs of healthcare in our nation,” Holden said. “We’re the richest nation in the history of the world and we should be able to provide guaranteed health care to every single American.”

Why I’m with David: Campaign volunteers share their experiences

This week: Richard Zelinka

Many elected Republicans rightly condemned Trump’s disgusting and unpatriotic performance at Helsinki, but not Rep. Francis Rooney. Rooney had no qualms about attacking Barack Obama’s efforts to engage with Putin and he has agreed with Mitt Romney that Russia is America’s adversary and that its efforts to destabilize the West must be opposed. But when Trump, before the whole world, aligns himself with that adversary and plays Putin’s lapdog, Rooney says nothing.

Whatever his beliefs, it would appear that for Rooney loyalty to Trump comes first. This November we must elect a representative who puts country first. That is why I will vote for David Holden.
